In the midst of the worst of the Tweed crisis, the September 16, 1871 issue of Harper’s Weekly devoted an editorial to “The Taint of Tammany.”  Editor George William Curtis criticized the Tribune, and Greeley by implication, for acquiescence to the Republican faction cooperating with the Tweed Ring.  It can hardly be a coincidence that the same issue devotes almost three pages and three large wood engravings to a flattering article on Greeley’s origins and career in an apparent attempt to contrast it with his current positions and associations.
