Complete HarpWeek Explanation:
In the December 16, 1871 issue of Harper’s Weekly, Greeley, with one leg in the Tribune bucket, and James Gordon Bennett Jr., who had succeeded his father as owner-editor of the New York Herald, are “The Rivals” competing in the business of whitewashing Oakey Hall, the beleaguered New York mayor:  “Let’s See Who Can Lay It On Thickest.”  The title of this cartoon recalls Nast’s 1859 Phunny Phellow cartoon, “Rival Jockeys,” which featured Greeley and Bennett’s father.
