In the December 16, 1871 issue of Harper’s Weekly, Greeley, with one
leg in the Tribune bucket, and James Gordon Bennett Jr., who had
succeeded his father as owner-editor of the New York Herald, are “The
Rivals” competing in the business of whitewashing Oakey Hall, the beleaguered
New York mayor: “Let’s See Who Can Lay It On Thickest.” The title of this
cartoon recalls Nast’s 1859 Phunny Phellow cartoon, “Rival Jockeys,” which featured Greeley and Bennett’s father.
