Week after week, Nast revealed his extraordinary industry and inventiveness,
including three whimsical designs for the August 10, 1872 issue of Harper’s
Weekly (published July 31). In the cover cartoon, “Any Thing To Get In,”
Greeley is a polka-dot Trojan Horse outside the walled and moated city of
Washington, D.C. Senator Carl Schurz is in the driver’s seat. Klansmen and
other disreputable thugs are loading aboard the Trojan Horse. After presumably
gaining access, they will open the capital gates to admit the waiting
politicians who can then proceed to take over the place.
